Think About It…

“There’s absolutely nothing wrong with being involved in your local church…but God didn’t create the universe and then retire into full-time churchwork.

God is not just interested in being Lord of the church…He’s interested in being Lord of all things.

And the way that happens is that as we bring everything in our lives under Christ’s authority, He begins to reign over those things.

So, He doesn’t just want our involvement in the local church. He wants to reign in our homes, our jobs, our businesses, our communities, our schools, our sports, our arts…all of it.

And yet, so many churches are just equipping people to be good church members…rather than equipping them to actually live their lives with Christ in all things.”

I believe that God created men and women to form committed partnerships with him and each other to serve him through their families, including each generation of children, which makes human families and their homes the “nest” for his transforming and redemptive work in the world. Churches should only be places where serving families can gather to share their accounts of what is doing in their homes and to encourage each other in the works of service to which they are each called.

Wayne, do you believe that a typical church, with its one-pastor [paid] leadership, and the weekly sermon (or two), and the possible mid-week service, and the members who smile at each other as they come and go (but with little or no relationships of substance), and the various programs and projects… is what God intended from the start?

Do you think it even remotely resembles the apostolic church or churches of the early centuries… or even the persecuted bodies worldwide today?

I KNOW I come across as judgmental, or like I think that I have it together (believe me, I don’t), but truthfully… “Church” as we know and experience it in our post-modern, western world is light-years removed from God’s intentions and design.

    What do you think, Wayne?

Geno…I couldn’t agree with you more! The church of the New Testament and the westernized church of today are distant cousins at best.

But I’m hopeful that God can turn it around. I wouldn’t call your comments judgmental at all. I think that if more of us speak candidly and thoughtfully on this issue, we’ll begin to turn the tide.

Keep doing what you’re doing, sir!

You said: “I think that if more of us speak candidly and thoughtfully on this issue, we’ll begin to turn the tide.”

I believe that’s exactly what the Lord is looking to bring about.
